The Forum of Northern Political Parties Chairmen (FNPPC) strongly rejects and condemend the recent call by the Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF) for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to declare a state of emergency in Zamfara State. We urge all stakeholders to prioritize dialogue, strengthen existing democratic structures, and support the state government in addressing security challenges without resorting to extreme measures.  


In a statement signed by the Forum’s General Secretary, Mall. Mikailu Abubakar, the coalition emphasized that while the security situation in Zamfara remains deeply concerning, a state of emergency would undermine constitutional governance and exacerbate tensions.

 Declaring a state of emergency is not only premature but counterproductive. It risks destabilizing the fragile democratic framework and disenfranchising the people of Zamfara, who deserve empowered leadership, not a suspension of their rights,  Mall. Abubakar stated.  

The FNPPC acknowledged the severity of banditry and violence in Zamfara but criticized the AYCF’s approach as overly simplistic.

 Governor Dauda Lawal Dare’s administration has been working tirelessly with federal security agencies to restore peace. Instead of politicizing the crisis, we must unite to strengthen intelligence sharing, community policing, and socio economic interventions to root out the causes of insecurity, the statement read.  


The Forum further condemned attempts to scapegoat the Zamfara State Government, noting that insecurity is a national challenge requiring collective action.  Allegations of mismanagement should be investigated through lawful channels, not used to justify unconstitutional measures. We call on the federal government to accelerate the deployment of advanced surveillance technology, increase troop presence, and enhance welfare for security personnel operating in the region.


Mall. Abubakar added, The FNPPC stands in solidarity with the people of Zamfara and urges President Tinubu to reject calls for a state of emergency. Instead, we advocate for a security summit involving all Northern governors, traditional leaders, and civil society to design sustainable solutions. Democracy must not be sacrificed on the altar of expediency.


The Forum concluded by urging the AYCF and other groups to channel their energies into constructive engagement with stakeholders rather than escalating tensions.  Now is the time for unity, not division. We call on all Nigerians to support efforts to restore peace while upholding the rule of law and democratic governance.
