The Kaduna State Chapter of the Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) has issued a stark warning over the worsening waste management crisis plaguing the state, urging immediate intervention to avert a public health and environmental emergency.  

Mountains of uncollected refuse now dominate major streets, markets, and residential areas across Kaduna, from Kawo to Sabon Tasha, obstructing drainage systems and creating breeding grounds for disease vectors. Key commercial hubs like Kasuwan Barci and Television Village Market are among the hardest hit, with traders and residents navigating hazardous piles of decaying waste.  

 In a press release signed by CNPP publicity secretary Ambs. Sanin Yaya condemned the situation as a “leadership failure,” noting that state sanitation agencies appear critically under-resourced. “Despite repeated government pledges to address waste management, including partnerships with private contractors and promises of modern equipment in 2023, the crisis has only deepened. Where is the accountability?” Yaya stated.  

The CNPP highlighted that delayed action risks escalating the crisis into a full-blown epidemic, with foul odors, contaminated water sources, and rodent infestations already endangering communities. The group criticized the Uba Sani administration for prioritizing “political projects” over essential services, despite allocating millions to sanitation initiatives that have yet to yield visible results.  

To address the crisis, the CNPP outlined critical steps for the Kaduna State Government:  

1. Increased Funding & Efficiency: Prioritize waste management in budgetary allocations, ensure timely payment to contractors, and equip sanitation teams with adequate tools and personnel.  

2. Public Awareness & Community Engagement*: Launch campaigns to promote proper waste disposal and support grassroots clean-up efforts.  

3. Enforcement of Sanitation Laws: Penalize individuals and businesses illegally dumping waste while revitalizing oversight mechanisms.  

“Kaduna’s residents deserve a clean, safe environment. If the current administration cannot fulfill this basic duty, it should make way for leaders who will,” CNPP emphasized.  

The CNPP urged swift action to restore Kaduna’s status as a model of urban development and prevent further deterioration of public health.
