The Conference of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP), Kaduna State Chapter, vehemently opposes and condemns the recent statement by Governor Uba Sani suggesting that Kaduna State will soon become a “one-party state.” 

This declaration is not only undemocratic but also a direct threat to the principles of plurality, freedom of choice, and healthy political competition enshrined in Nigeria’s Constitution and the spirit of federalism.  

As a coalition of registered political parties committed to strengthening democracy in Kaduna State and Nigeria, we view the Governor’s remark as reckless, divisive, and antithetical to the ideals of participatory governance. Nigeria’s democracy thrives on multi-party representation, which ensures accountability, inclusivity, and balanced development. Any attempt to suppress opposition or coerce citizens into a monopolized political system is a regression to authoritarianism and an affront to the sacrifices of Nigerians who have fought for democratic freedom.  

OUR POSITION:

1. Democracy Requires Choice: A one-party system erodes the bedrock of democracy by denying citizens the right to freely associate, express dissent, and choose leaders through fair elections. Kaduna State, like Nigeria, is a diverse society with varying political ideologies; this diversity must be respected.  

2. Constitutional Violation: The 1999 Constitution (as amended) guarantees the right to form and belong to political parties. Governor Sani’s statement undermines this right and raises concerns about potential abuse of power to intimidate opposition. 

3. Accountability at Risk: A monopoly of power breeds impunity. The CNPP warns that stifling opposition parties will embolden bad governance, corruption, and neglect of the people’s needs. 

4. Kaduna’s Legacy: Kaduna State has a history of vibrant political engagement. We will not tolerate attempts to erase this legacy or intimidate parties and voters into submission.  

*WE DEMAND:* 

- Governor Uba Sani immediately retracts his statement and reaffirms his commitment to upholding democratic norms.-    

- Security agencies and institutions like INEC to resist any partisan pressure and ensure a level playing field for all parties ahead of future elections.  

- Civil society, the media, and citizens to remain vigilant against actions or policies that threaten democratic freedom.  

The CNPP Kaduna Chapter stands united with all progressive forces to resist any form of dictatorship, whether by individuals or institutions. 

We urge Governor Sani to focus on delivering good governance addressing insecurity, poverty, and infrastructure deficits rather than engaging in divisive rhetoric. Kaduna’s people deserve leaders who prioritize their welfare, not political conquests.
